A Science Olympiad team from South Middle School competed against the top schools in the state at the New York Science Olympiad Tournament in Syracuse from April 8 to 9. South Middle was the top-performing school from Nassau County for the second consecutive year, and the team finished in sixth place in New York State.
Fifteen South Middle students participated in the state tournament, which featured 23 challenges requiring knowledge and skills in science, technology and engineering. South Middle earned medals in 14 out of 23 events, including a first-place finish in the Bridge event (Allen Vee and Nandini Khaneja), third place in Disease Detectives (Austin Cheng and Alice Kim), and third place in the Solar System event (Allen Vee and Nandini Khaneja).
This is the fourth consecutive year that South Middle qualified for the state tournament by winning a top spot at the Western Long Island Regional Science Olympiad, held in March. The South Middle Science Olympiad is coached by Tobias Hatten, science department chairperson.
