South Middle Science Olympiad Team Excels At States

A Science Olympiad team from South Middle School competed against the top schools in the state at the New York Science Olympiad Tournament in Syracuse from April 14–15. South Middle earned medals in 18 out of 23 events — the most medals of any team in the tournament — and the team finished in fourth place in New York State.

Fifteen South Middle students participated in the state tournament: Maureen Bai, Bryan Cheng, Atharv Dhawan, Isabella Huang, Zirong (Isabella) Jiang, Mark Li, Edric Tsai, Ryan Tsai, Diana Wang, Chenxu (Max) Wang, Josephine Wong, Jerry Xu, Joyce Xu, Olivia Zhen, and Eric Zhuang.

The competition was comprised of 23 challenges requiring knowledge and skills in various disciplines within science, technology, and engineering. Top performances for the South Middle team included first-place finishes in Anatomy and Physiology (Ryan Tsai and Edric Tsai) and Write-it-Do-it (Olivia Zhen and Maureen Bai), as well as second place in Meteorology (Eric Zhuang and Isabella Jiang) and Bio Process Lab (Isabella Jiang and Olivia Zhen).

This is the fifth consecutive year that South Middle qualified for the state tournament by winning a top spot at the Western Long Island Regional Science Olympiad, held in March. The South Middle Science Olympiad is coached by Tobias Hatten, science department chairperson, Diane Caplain, and Nathan Wong.
