Thanksgiving came early to the Great Neck Social Center at 80 Grace Ave. this year. On Thursday, Nov. 17, 10 students from the Great Neck South High School Community Action Committee (CAC) provided a hot, nutritious and delicious Thanksgiving dinner to about 50 seniors at the center.
Under the supervision of Committee Advisor Jo-AnnEyre McNeil Cruz, department chairperson for guidance, the students took orders for dinner and served each person individually. Each guest was treated to fresh hot rolls with butter, salad with dressing, roast chicken, carrots, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing and assorted pastries for dessert.
One of the seniors told the students “how wonderful it is to be served such a delightful meal, especially when I can be surrounded by my friends. If it was not for this dinner, I probably would be having Thanksgiving dinner alone. It is truly a blessing.” Another commented that “the students were so professional and polite. I thank them for brightening my day.” The dinner was appreciated by all the seniors, who thanked the group for coming.
McNeil Cruz said that the students look forward to providing the Thanksgiving dinner and worked very hard preparing the meal, serving the seniors and cleaning up the center dining room afterward. This has been the club’s annual project for the past several years. The club also does fundraising for other worthwhile organizations in the Great Neck community.
