At its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m., Reach Out America will present “Faith, Politics and the First Amendment.” Our speaker for this timely topic will be the Reverend Steven Baines. Based in Washington, D.C., Reverend Baines is a national spokesperson on issues of faith and politics.
He is religious outreach director at Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
He is responsible for the organization’s national engagement with and mobilization of people of faith. His many years as a practicing member of the clergy make him a most effective advocate for the separation of church and state. He is currently serving as Vice-Moderator at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
Before coming to his present position he served as director of Interfaith Outreach at both the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice and People for the American Way. He has also served as executive director for Equal Partners in Faith, a national interfaith organization committed to fighting racism, sexism and homophobia.
Rev. Baines has been featured debating leaders of the Religious Right on CNN, CSPAN, Court TV and numerous syndicated talk radio shows. The program with Rev. Baines will begin at 2 p.m at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, 48 Shelter Rock Rd. in Manhasset. Reach Out America’s regular meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. All are invited.
