South High School freshman Alyssa Wong has been selected as a scholarship recipient through the second annual New Faces program, part of the Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance. Alyssa has been awarded a full scholarship for the Rider University Musical Theatre Institute (MTI), a pre-college summer program.
The New Faces program recognizes high school students for outstanding solo performance in each of three categories: vocal, acting, and dance. For the first round of competition, Alyssa received coaching by Ilana Meredith, Theatre South director/drama teacher, and vocal music coaching by Dr. Janine Robinson, vocal music teacher. After being selected as one of 30 finalists from the greater New York area, Alyssa participated in a coaching session in New York City led by professionals from various areas of the performing arts industry. A panel of professional Broadway casting directors adjudicated video auditions to select New Faces finalists and scholarship winners.
The Broadway Education Alliance, presenter of the Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance, is a non-profit organization that supports theatre arts education and enrichment programs.
