Five eighth-graders from North and South middle schools received Certificates of Recognition in the 2016 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Promising Young Writers Program.
The recipients were Vera Cho and Brandon Lin from North Middle; and Andrew Apaza, Shin Young Park and Alice Zhang from South Middle.
Competition participants submitted two pieces of writing, which were read by national judges. Papers were judged on content, purpose, audience tone, word choice, organization, development and style.
