The Great Neck North High School Blazers Men’s soccer team is off to an amazing hot start. This team is on par to be one of the best Great Neck North’s teams in many years. And with a little luck in the final two games, they will have a chance to bring a conference championship to Great Neck. This will be an addition to the banner marking the success of the team displayed in the school gym.

Currently undefeated, they head into the final two games of the season with a spot in the playoffs guaranteed. With a record of 6-0-2, six wins, two ties and no losses the team is looking to finish the season strong against two mighty opponents, Jericho and Carey. In the last away game against Sawanaka, Great Neck North outscored its opponents 5-0. In the first minutes of the game Dylan Solomon received an exquisite through ball from Alex Guela, rendering the defense helpless and finished it off with a strong strike to the bottom left corner of the goal, past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper. Additional goals were scored by Ben Avakook, Rudy Veliz, Alex Guela, and Isaac Turofsky.

Led by Coach Berzins, most of this team has played together for many years. Many of the players have played together since 4th Grade in the Great Neck Soccer Association as well as through JV and Varsity such as Dylan Solomon, Tillie Lamoretti, Damien Chafe, Alex Guela, Luke Hakimian, Issac Turofsky under the coaching of Harlon of Great Neck Soccer. Making this team such a powerhouse is the high-class performance of Ryan Sheena, Eytan Ran, Yona Hassid, Jack Kareff and Matthew Heimowitz. One of the main reasons this team is so strong is the goal stopping and leadership ability of Matthew Heimowitz.

Great Neck High School’s junior varsity team coached by Coach Barbach has been an amazing breeding ground for such a strong Varsity team. Almost all the Varsity players took time to develop their skills and abilities on the Junior Varsity team prior to them competing at the next level. This team has persevered through obstacles such as a shortened season due to COVID protocols. The shortened season did not include a preseason which helps the players conditioning and chemistry.

Good luck to the team in the final two games and bring back at conference championship to Great Neck North High School!

Jaren Solomon is a 10th grade student at Great Neck North High School. He plays on the JV soccer team, the Varsity Swim team and the Varsity Golf team.
