History of Stepping Stones Lighthouse
December 14, 2017 - January 13, 2018
The Great Neck Historical Society will present The History of Great Neck Stepping Stones Lighthouse exhibit in the Main Library Gallery, lower level. Stepping Stones Lighthouse, an essential aid to navigation, was built in 1876 to protect ships from a dangerous boulder reef which exists in Long Island Sound, very close to the tip of Great Neck. The lighthouse is less than a mile from our shore and is best seen from Steppingstones Park, the Merchant Marine Academy, the Throgs Neck Bridge, City Island and from the water. The goal of the Historical Society, Town of North Hempstead and Great Neck Park District is to restore the lighthouse so tours of the structure can be made and they safely share this relic of the past with the community.
