Councilmember Lurvey Honors Resident And Local Hero Ronald Poons

    Councilmember Veronica Lurvey recently attended the inaugural Honoring Our Veterans event held by Great Neck North High School’s Aid to Our Troops club on May 27. The celebration honors local heroes from the community. Councilmember Lurvey presented Ronald Poons with a proclamation of recognition thanking him for his service to the United States and for his dedication to the local community.
    Ronald Poons, Great Neck North Class of 1959, and Green Beret Veteran, has been a lifelong Great Neck resident. He enlisted in the military in 1963 and after basic training was assigned to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for advanced military training. In 1965 he was reassigned to the 11th Special Forces Group Airborne-The Green Berets. He became an active member of the Great Neck Alert Fire Department in 1964 and rose through the ranks, which included serving as Chief. Today, he is a member for the Village of Great Neck’s Board for Appeals.
