Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and Great Neck South High School’s Kulsoom Rasheed collected 277 pounds of dog and cat food, treats, kitty litter and pet toys last year.

Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel is sponsoring the Fifth Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive in the 16th Assembly District in partnership with Long Island Cares. The drive, which will run during the month of April, will help local soup kitchens and food pantries meet the needs of struggling families with pets.

“It is heartbreaking to know of beloved pets that are placed into shelters simply because their families can
no longer afford to feed them. These decisions are made by struggling families who have to choose between
heating their homes, buying medi-cations, putting food on their tables
and feeding family pets,” said Schimel.

Supplies, toys, food and treats for dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, reptiles and ferrets will be collected at Schimel’s Great Neck office at 45 North Station Plaza, Suite 203, as well as at the Great Neck Social Center at 80 Grace Ave., the Herricks Community Center at 999 Herricks Rd. and the Port Washington Community Chest at 382 Main St.
